The Lady with a Hat

The eighth instalment of the FFF held last night at The Horse Hospital, centred around the period of the Second Word War. The intimate screening included a selection of newsreels and instructional 'make-do-and-mend' shorts as well as a one-hour long documentary focusing on the extraordinarily eventful life of the Jewish milliner May Aubert. The staggering (sometimes unbelievable) series of events, told charismatically by the eighty-seven year old herself, details her prolific career making hats for stars including Marlene Dietrich, her escape from the Nazis and her fascinating journey from Stockholm -via Moscow and Japan- to Canada in which she resourcefully smuggled 100,000 Norwegian Kroner in the lining of one of her hats.
