Transformative: Sam McKnight on Princess Diana

Transformative is back! Hand-in-hand with our Subjective series, which sees Nick Knight re-examine fashion photography from the model's point of view, our Transformative project presents a history of contemporary fashion imagery from the perspective of those who work behind the scenes: makeup artists, stylists and hairdressers.

This week's interview is with hairdresser Sam McKnight, who discusses working with Princess Diana on her December 1991 Vogue cover. McKnight recalls how the pictures (shot by Patrick Demarchelier) were a private commission but tuned out so well that Vogue had to have them. He also speaks about his long collaboration with the Princess, from travelling around the world with her to famously cropping her hair. 'It was a little bit inspired by Linda,' he reveals.

Watch the complete interview now and stay tuned for more as Transformative develops. While you wait, don't forget to catch up on the first instalment of the series, Nick Knight's chat with makeup artist Val Garland!
