About
Debating Elsa Schiaparelli's remark that, 'women dress alike all over the world: they dress to be annoying to other women', SHOWstudio's new Selling Sex live broadcast questions the process of putting on clothes; can fashion be an entirely individual journey, and a method of self-exploration? Coinciding with the display of her Armour for Prostitutes in SHOWstudio's Selling Sex exhibition, latex doyenne Atsuko Kudo provides a lesson in dressing for personal pleasure, to be streamed live from SHOWstudio's headquarters on Friday 18 May at 11:00 BST.
Japanese-born Kudo walks SHOWstudio viewers through the intricacies of applying her signature second-skin pieces, playing with the typical sexual connotations of dressing and undressing. Given that Kudo has previously dressed famously fearsome females such as Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Grace Jones, there's no-one better to instruct on the way women's clothing can serve as personal armour. By slowly enveloping a nude model in layers of rubbery fabric, Kudo offers a unique, and subversively fetishistic, exploration of the dialogue between clothing and empowerment. A live Q&A alongside the stream allows viewers the chance to grill Kudo and her team on the events being shown.
